20th Pennsylvania Infantry - Company B

    Henry, Charles P. (1827-1894), private, railroad worker.
    Also served in Company D, 147th Pennsylvania Volunteers and Company M, 28th Pennsylvania Vols. Later lived near Jeanís Mill, Tredyffrin Twp. His pension was filed on 9/23/1879 for being invalid and later for his widow. He died on May 22, 1904. His funeral was at Valley Presbyterian.
33rd Pennsylvania Infantry - Company K (4th Pennsylvania Reserves, ìExton Guardsî)

    Morrison, Isaac, private, 33, plasterer, Upper Uwchlan Township.
    He deserted on August 22, 1861 in Baltimore, MD. The 1860 census, however, lists him as 40 years old, a plasterer living on the property of Joseph March in West Pikeland Township.

    Wise, William, private, 22, plasterer, East Pikeland.
    On July 17, 1861 he was transferred to Fort Delaware to serve an unexpired term. 1860 census, however, lists as 20, plasterer, living on property of Abner Pennypacker in West Pikeland Township. His pension was filed on 9/10/1890 for being invalid and later for his widow. He died Dec. 6, 1900 in Seven Stars, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

    Himes, Nelson F., private, 20.
    He died of typhoid at Camp Tenally in Washington, D.C. His brothers John, George and William also served. The 1860 census lists him as age 19, a farm laborer, living on the property of his father, Daniel Himes. His pension was filed on 5/29/1882 for his father.

    Irwin, David, private, 20.
    He was discharged by a surgeon on November 27, 1861.
49th Pennsylvania Infantry - Company B

    Beerbrower, Sylvester D., private, 20, carpenter.
    The 1860 census lists him as 18, a carpenter living on the property of Owen Beerbrower, presumably his father. His pension was filed on 11/7/1872 for being invalid and later for his widow. He died on July 5, 1895 in Wilmington, DE.
68th Pennsylvania Infantry (ìScottís Legionî)

Company F

    Williams, Robert, private, 21, laborer.
    He was absent, sick, at muster out. His pension was filed under name Robert C. Williams, on 12/8/1879 for being invalid and later for his widow. He possibly is listed in the 1860 census as living in Charlestown Township, living on the property of 31 year old David Hartman. Robert was listed as 20, farm laborer, with no property.
Company I

    Atkins, Joseph R. (1838-1915), sergeant, blacksmith.
    Became a Corporal, May 1, 1863 and Sergeant, March 1, 1864. He was shot in the arm, Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. Lived in town of Warren Tavern after the war. Pension was filed 8/20/1890 and 2/26/1907 for being invalid and 1/8/1916 for his widow. He died 12/251915 in Malvern, Pennsylvania.

    Himes, William S., Corporal, 18, miller.
    He was discharged by a surgeon on Sept. 13, 1864. The 1860 census lists him as William S. Himes, 17, a miller apprentice living on the property of John Krauser, a 32-year-old miller and Mill proprietor. He was the brother of John, Nelson and George Himes. His pension was filed on 1/10/1880 and 2/14/1907 for being invalid. For several years he was employed by the Phoenix Iron Company and at one time served in the Phoenixville Borough Council. He died in Erie in August of 1912.

    Graham, Isaac W. (1836-1893), private, butcher.
    His pension was filed 2/26/1889 for being invalid and later for his widow. Before the war he was a butcher, after the war he farmed. He had a wife and three kids. Was Supervisor and School Director and also on the Board of Managers for the Pikeland Creamery for ten years. He died on 11/6/1893 after serving on a jury and catching pneumonia from a drafty window.

    Hughes, Harmon B., private, 22, laborer.
    His pension was filed on 7/30/1890 and 3/13/1907 for being invalid. On 10/13/1866, he married Miss Elizabeth Shearer, of West Vincent. He died on Oct. 1, 1918 in Spring City, Pennsylvania and was buried at Pughtown Baptist Cemetery.

    King, Jacob (1836-1901), private, laborer.
    The 1860 census lists a Jacob J. King, age 21, ìS. Moulderî living on the property of (presumably) his father, Jacob King, age 70, a miller who owned no real estate and $200 worth of personal estate. The 1870 census lists Jacob King as 30, a day laborer, living on the property of Milton Williams, a 41-year-old farmer. Jacob died on June 3, 1901 and his funeral was at the Pikeland Reformed Church.

    Krauser, Evan L, private, 23, miller.
    His pension was filed on 5/4/1880 and 2/15/1907 for being invalid and 6/26/1925 for his widow.

    Kunkle, William D., private, 22, farmer.
    He was discharged by a surgeon on March 5, 1863. His pension was filed on 2/17/1870 and 2/16/1907 for his being invalid.

    OíBrian, Robert, private, 25, laborer.
    He was discharged by a surgeon on Feb. 9, 1863. The 1860 census lists him as 22, a farm laborer living on the property of Isaac Tustin, farmer. Robert OíBrian was Irish born. On 3/8/1864, Rev. Knipe married him and Miss Hannah E. Keeley, both of West Pikeland. His pension was filed on 3/29/1880 for being invalid and later for his widow. When he died in October of 1893, he was living in French Creek Bridge, Pickering. He died of gangrene of the foot.

    Quay, William K., private, 24, farmer.
    He was wounded at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863, and mustered out with his company on June 9, 1865. Lived in Meadville, Pennsylvania after war. The 1860 census lists him as living in Charlestown Township, a 21 year old carpenter with no wealth, living on the property of John P. Quay, 26. His pension was filed on 11/17/1879 and 2/23/1907 for being invalid and 7/26/1912 for his widow. He also served in Company K of 68th Pennsylvania Volunteers. On 10/10/1907, William came back to visit West Chester from his home in Meadville, Pennsylvania. He was a member of post 424 GAR, and 147 WUL. He was married in June, 1887, to Miss Anna Hartman, both living in Phoenixville at the time.
97th Pennsylvania Infantry - Company K (ìWayne guardsî)

    Beerbrower, Theodore, private, 22, Carpenter.
    The 1860 census lists him as 20, a carpenter who lived on the property of Owen Beerbrower, 43-year-old carpenter. The 1870 census lists him as 31, a house carpenter. He owned $1,800 in real estate and $400 in personal estate. His pension was filed on 12/9/1896 and 2/19/1907 for being invalid. He died in February of 1908 at the age of 62 and was buried ìwith military and civic honors.î He was a member of Josiah White Post G.A.R., Masonic Order, Patriotic Order Sons of America, and was by trade a carpenter and builder.
99th Pennsylvania Infantry - Company G

    Emery, Joseph G., sergeant, 24, Farm Laborer
    He was wounded at Fredericksburg, Virginia on Dec. 13, 1862. He died of Wounds, Jan. 2, 1863. The 1860 census lists him as 23, a farm laborer living on the property of Catharine McDuffer who was a housekeeper.
101st Pennsylvania Infantry - Company D (2nd 101st, Replacement Troops)

    Himes, John, 1st Sergeant, 28
    The 1860 census lists him as 23, a carpenter, living on the property of his father, Daniel Himes, age 48, farmer.
109th Pennsylvania Infantry - Company E (ìCurtin Light Guardsî)

    Rice, Harry, private, 19, farmer
    He was killed at Cedar Mountain, VA, Aug. 9, 1862. His pension was filed 7/18/1890 for his father.
110th Pennsylvania Infantry - Company G.

    Snyder, Daniel U., 1st Lieutenant, 23, machinist.
    He became a captain on Sept. 23, 1862. He was discharged Aug. 21, 1863. The 1860 census lists him as 22, a machinist living on the property of his father, August U. Snyder, hotelkeeper (Yellow Springs Spa property), age 62. His military papers say he was wounded at Fredericksburg. His pension was filed on 12/21/1887 for being invalid and later for his wife. He also served in Company B, 18th Pennsylvania volunteers and Company I,110th Pennsylvania Volunteers.
112th Pennsylvania Volunteers (2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery Regiment), Company L

    Emery, Isaac D., private.
    He was wounded at Chapinís Farm, Virginia on Sept. 29, 1864. He died of wounds, on Oct. 16, 1864. The 1860 census lists him as 25, a farm laborer living on the property of Catharine McDuffer who was a housekeeper.
119th Pennsylvania Infantry - Company I

    Hallman, William H., private, 25, gentleman.
    He and his wife were killed in October of 1877 in the Pickering Valley Railroad accident. Also killed were Isaac Tustin and his son, Jones Tustin, and Nathan Pennypacker.
124th Pennsylvania Infantry - Company A

    Artis, James, private, 21, farmer.
    His pension was filed as James W. Arters on 6/1/1885 for being invalid and later for his widow. Also served in Company F, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry and Company F, 1st Pennsylvania Prov. Cavalry.

    Griffith, Evan, private, 40, shoemaker.
    He was wounded on Jan. 10, 1863. He was in the hospital at muster out. The 1860 census lists him as 41, a farm laborer who owned no real estate, $90 in personal estate. The 1870 census lists him as 49, a spoke cutter, who owned $275 in personal estate. His pension was filed on 4/23/1863 for being invalid. A 4/27/1908 obituary lists Evan Griffith, who died in West Chester and spent most of his life was as a farmer in Charlestown Township. Obituary says he is 84 years old (note discrepancy with above age).
147th Pennsylvania Infantry - Company D

    Henry, Charles P. (1827-1894), private, railroad worker
    His pension was filed on 7/23/1879 for being invalid and later for his widow. He also served in Company M, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry and Company B, 20th Pennsylvania Infantry.

    Oberholtzer, Levi (1832-1922), surgeon.
    He served as an Assistant Surgeon in the 139th Pennsylvania Infantry, from Aug. 27, 1862. Served as a Surgeon in the 147th Pennsylvania Infantry, Jan. 16, 1863 to March 7, 1863. He received his M.D. in 1854 from the University of Pennsylvania. He was born Oct. 27, 1832 in Uwchlan Township to Elias and Catherine (Acker) Oberholtzer. He had a drug businesses in Phoenixville, 1855-1866, 1879-. He was a physician and the Mayor of Phoenixville three times. He was one of the founding members of the Phoenixville National Bank. He died at age 99 in Phoenixville in January of 1922.
175th Pennsylvania Infantry

Company B

    Hughes, Joseph C., private, 26, laborer
    The 1860 census lists him as 25, a farm laborer, living on the property of George Sloyer who was a farmer. His pension was filed on 7/28/1890 for his widow. An 1/19/1890 obituary states that he died in Phoenixville, at age 55. Born in West Vincent Township and worked for many years for James Lumis. He was active in the temperance movement.

    Nichols, Elias C., private, 24, laborer
    He was a substitute for John Pyle, 27-year-old farmer from London Grove Township. His pension was filed on 7/21/1891 for being invalid. ìElias C. Nickolsî was married on the 26th of September, 1861 to Miss Maggie C. Hartenstine of Pine Swamp by Rev. J. B. Dennison.

    Speakman, Henry, private, 18, laborer
    He was a substitute for Morris Hibberd, 36-year-old miller from East Whiteland Township. The 1870 census lists Henry as 27, a day laborer, who owned $250 in personal estate. The 1860 census lists Henry as from Valley Township, a servant, age 16, who lived on the property of farmer John Griffith, age 64. Henryís pension was filed on 10/13/1879 for being invalid and on 5/2/1921 for his widow.

Company C

    Emery, Oliver, 23, laborer
    Is on the original draft list, but no record appears that he actually served. The 1860 census lists Oliver ìEmryî as 22, a farmer who owned no real estate and $230 in personal estate. On 3/24/1894 he committed. He suffered from severe pains in the head and shot himself in the head. Emery was a ìprominent and popular citizen of West Pikeland Township.î He was, at that time, supervisor of the eastern district of West Pikeland Township.

    King, Thomas S., private, 32, laborer.
    The 1860 census lists him as 25, a farm laborer, living on the property of (presumably) his father, Jacob King, age 70, a miller. A pension was filed on 7/7/1890 and 9/14/1907 for being invalid and 3/27/1911 for his widow. On Oct. 28th, 1868, Thomas S. King married Miss Emma McNeel, both of West Pikeland Township. His brothers also served - Jacob King (68th) and William King (175th).

    Pennypacker, Alban (ìAbnerî), private, 37, farmer
    The 1860 census lists him as Abner Pennypacker, 34, a farmer with $1,600 worth of real estate and $335 worth of personal estate. The 1870 census lists him as Albin, 45, house plasterer with $2,000 in real estate and $600 in personal estate. On July 11, 1852, he married Miss Anna Lavina Shoffner of West Pikeland Township.

    Jester, Levis James, corporal, 43, butcher
    1860 census lists him as 40, a butcher who owned $1,000 in real estate and $486 in personal estate. He is listed here as ìGester.î In 1866, his Jester & Company manufactured the Excelsior Leather Preservative. His pension was filed on 9/18/1890 for his widow.

    Broomall, John, private, 27, laborer
    His pension was filed 7/23/1890 and 3/8/1907 for being invalid.

    Swinehart, Isaac, township unknown.
    Substitute for Frederick Holman of West Pikeland Township. A 4/25/1868 refers to an Isaac Swinehart who married he married Miss Susanna Pennypacker on April 9, 1868, both of West Vincent Township.

    Opperman, David, laborer
    The 1860 census lists as David Upperman, age 26, a farm laborer living on the property of his father David Upperman, age 62, farmer. Bates History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers says he mustered in and ìDeserted - Date unknown.î He died on November 20, 1904. He had a general store from 1870 on. Member of the Patriotic Order Sons of America.

    King, George, Jr., sergeant, 31 dealer
    The 1860 census lists him as 29, a dealer, who owned nothing of real estate value but $530 personal estate. His pension was filed on 8/12/1890 for being invalid and later for his widow. He was married at Norristown in November, 1852 by Rev. Miller, to Miss Sarah Ann Shoffner of Norristown.

    Dougherty, Edward, West Whiteland Township
    He was a substitute for William C. Pugh, 25, of West Pikeland Township.

    Sturgis, Jesse, corporal, 24, laborer
    His pension was filed on 1/7/1891 for being invalid and later for his widow. A 6/29/1891 article states that he died at the age of 69. He was a member of St. Matthews reformed church, and left a widow and three children.

    Miller, Harman, township unknown
    He was a substitute for George C. Kimes who served in Company G. of the 12th Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia, farmer. There is no record of Miller.

    Lynch, Henry, private, 18
    He was a substitute for Peter S. Davis, of West Pikeland Township. A pension was filed on 7/11/1908 for Henry Lynchís being invalid.

    Moore, William, private, 34, miner
    Other sources indicate he may have been a miller. The 1860 census lists him as 32, a manual laborer who owned $250 in personal estate. He was born in West Germany. His pension was filed on 8/13/1890 and 2/26/1907 for being invalid. He died in June of 1910 at the age of 83. He was survived by a wife and six children. He and his wife came to the U.S. from Germany when he was 22. It took him three months to get here. He landed in NY and went to Philadelphia as a cabinet maker and later moved to Chester County and worked as a carpenter and contractor building houses.

    King, William, private, 27, mason
    He died of fever in Washington, N.C., on June 2, 1863. The 1860 census lists him as 23, a stone mason living on the property of (presumably) his father, Jacob King, age 70, a miller. He was the brother of Jacob King (68th) and Thomas S. King (175th).

    Davis, John H., private, 24, farmer
    The 1860 census lists a John H. Davis listed as age 47, farmer, who owned $ 20,700 in real estate and $1,833 in personal estate (#225). A pension was filed on 7/31/1890 for being invalid, later for his widow (For John K. Davis).

    Massey, John F., private, 23, miller
    His pension was filed on 4/23/1901 and 2/20/1907 for being invalid and 10/3/1927 for his widow.

    King, John
    Listed in original draft record that he ìcannot come here with safety.î The 1860 census lists him as 38, a farmer, with $4,752 worth of real estate and $1,990 worth of personal estate.

    McCord, Augustis, private, 24, laborer
    The 1860 census lists him as 20, a farm laborer living on the property of John Fagley who was a farmer. His pension was filed on 11/10/1900and 2/4/1907 for being invalid. Pension records also say that he served in Company B and H of the Pennsylvania Cavalry, Company B of the 2nd Pennsylvania Prov. Cavalry.

    Evans, Levi P., private, 29, laborer
    The 1870 Census lists as him as 34, ìRuns Stationary Engineî and owned $2,000 in personal Estate. His pension was filed on 3/1/1895 for being invalid and on 10/25/1919 for his widow.

    Himes, Benjamin, private, 27, farmer -
    He was discharged on Nov. 22, 1862, and a substitute was furnished. The 1860 census lists as 25, a farmer, with a 25 year old wife and 10 year old Hugh Thomas living with them. Himes owned $4,000 in real estate and $565 in personal estate.

    Pennypacker, Levi, private, 44, gentleman
    The 1860 census lists him as 42, a farmer who owned $10,800 in real estate and $2,573 in personal estate. He married Hannah Green of West Vincent Township on March 29, 1854. His pension was filed on 10/11/1890 for his widow.

    Lockhart, Samuel, private, 31, laborer
    The 1870 census lists him as 39, an iron ore mine worker who owned 700 in personal estate. He was born in Ireland. He was married on September 14, 1856 to Miss Deborah E. Stauffer of Chester Springs.

    Landis, Peter, private, 28, fencer
    The 1860 census lists him as 24, a farm laborer living on the property of John Yeager who was a farmer.

Company K

    Chrystal, John, private 35, farmer
    He was a substitute for Adam Mowrer a 24 year old farmer from West Vincent Township. The 1860 census lists him as John Christal, 25, a farmer with $3,000 in real estate and $500 in personal estate.
186th Pennsylvania Infantry - Company G

    Himes, George, private,
    He mustered in March 24, 1864 and mustered out with Company Aug. 15, 1865. This was the brother of John, Nelson and William Himes. The 1860 census lists him as George B., age 14, a farm apprentice living on the property of his father, Daniel Himes. The 1870 census lists him as 24, a farm laborer living on the property of his father Daniel Himes. He married Sally Sloyer of West Pikeland Township in December, 1884. His pension was filed on 7/14/1890 for being invalid. He died on Jan. 10, 1920, in Philadelphia..
192nd Pennsylvania Infantry - Company N

    Prizer, Hartman (Benjamin H.), private, 19, farmer
    The 1870 census lists him as 28, a machinist and engineer with $600 in personal property. Also served in Company G, 28th Pennsylvania. He died Nov. 13, 1902. His pension was filed on 4/26/1897 for being invalid and later for his widow.

    Dewees, Thomas B. (1844-1919), 1st Lieutenant 20, laborer
    Mustered in on July 21, 1864.
