- Since We Started out Soldiering -
West Pikeland Township through the Civil War

Hello...My name is John S. Himes. I was born in 1837 on a farm on the Conestoga Turnpike, what you now call route 401, in West Pikeland Township, in the County of Chester, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. During my time, I lived as a laborer, soldier, shopkeeper, mill operator and even a postmaster. I even dabbled in politics for a short while.

I would like to show you my world and my times. The place is Chester Springs and vicinity, situated in West Pikeland Township. The time is the 1860s when our great nation was in the midst of a great conflict...
